i love the woods, and this family think the same so we decided on a shoot in sherrardswood, welwyn garden.

mum wanted some family shots, and what struck me was their closeness, it was lovely to see their connection with each other.

(maisy, the dog came along too…although she couldn’t sit still for too long!)

here are just a few of my favourites from the session…

mum’s in the frame hertfordshire photographer

mum’s in the frame hertfordshire photographer

a comment from a client the other day got me thinking about how self conscious us mum’s are in photo’s. we concentrate on the wrinkles, the messy hair, the wonky smile….you name it, we have it!

but, is this important? of course it isn’t.

we concentrate on these things but that’s not what matters. will our children look back on moments captured between us and them and notice or care about our wrinkles, messy hair, wonky smiles etc? of course they won’t, the memories those images depict are what will count…and last forever.

(although they will definitely laugh at what we were wearing!)

we are all so busy, and are forever saying “doesn’t time fly”…it’s so over used and yet so true. all these shared moments are so quickly forgotten, yet so precious…we will never get them back.

so, with this in mind i have made a promise to myself to get in the frame more. (if only to prove to the kids in years to come that i was in fact very there!) i owe it to myself and my kids too. i know that it won’t only be me that treasures these photo’s, i know that in years to come they will be treasured by my children too, and possibly their children after that. they will in fact become a piece of our family history.

i made a little gallery of a few of my favourite photo’s from recent sessions where mum did in fact take that big step, and get in the frame. well done all you beautiful mum’s…i know you will never regret it!

*if you are feeling brave enough, give me a call and book your session with the kids…or just call to discuss x*

two little lovelies! hitchin photographer.

these two were so sweet, we had a lovely morning in their nana’s garden, making a photo gallery for their daddies birthday present.

it was dry, bright and warm…a perfect morning for playing (and taking photo’s)

i particularly liked the black and white shots of this shoot, and i think mum did too as she chose several to put on the wall as canvasses…which i happen to think will look great together!

a present for grandad welwyn garden city photographer

a present for grandad welwyn garden city photographer

i got the opportunity this summer to photograph two of my nephews and their cousins together. previously my nephews would come under the category “most camera shy subjects”! but they were on their very best behaviour as this shoot was a present for grandad! i have to say they rose to the challenge and did their mum proud, as did their cousins.

we couldn’t have picked a wetter, more stormy day for the shoot. forty five mins beforehand the skies were dark and the rain pouring heavily. we almost put it off, and then the sun shone and lit up the woods and the steam created a stunning effect in the light…

here are a few from that session.

(if you would like a “present for grandad,” or anyone else for that matter, please feel free to contact me to discuss.

an evening photo shot welwyn garden city photographer

an evening photo shoot welwyn garden city photographer

i decided a couple of weeks ago to take the trip to Hitchin Lavender   http://www.hitchinlavender.com   as they were open for a late evening. i took plenty of cameras to keep the kids occupied and of course one for myself! the sun was setting and the field of lavender glowed in the golden light, bees were busy, buzzing around us but that didn’t bother my four. i was pleased to have them all with me and they even humoured me by letting me take a few quick shots of them together!

it is a beautiful setting at this time of year, and the entrance fee allows you to cut your own bunch of lavender to take away. there is a beautiful 17th century barn there which sells products made from the lavender grown as well as a huge collection of locally made cakes and goodies! (unfortunately we were too late for that, but there is always next time!)

so, we have since dried our bouquets of lavender and the sweet aroma fills the house now on these warm summer nights. just a little reminder, along with the photo’s, of a perfect hour spent in a perfect location , on a perfect summers evening!

i think i may have “over shared” here…i just couldn’t help myself!!!

(please note, Hitchin Lavender charge a £50 location fee to anyone wishing to do a professional shoot there)

all grown up welwyn garden city photographer

all grown up welwyn garden city photographer

back in february she said “my prom’s soon, we need to get a dress”

“when is it darling?” i replied

“july 4th” she said

and so it began, the search for that elusive dress. i thought it would be easy, how wrong could i have been?!

“i don’t like belts, i don’t like halter necks, i can’t wear strapless, that colour doesn’t suit me, i don’t want a short one, mummy that is sooo ugly you have no idea” and so it went on….!

5 months later, 30 or so dresses later, and numerous “talks” from me saying it’s not  about the dress it’s about having a good time we find “the one” (thank goodness) with only about a week to spare!

and, in the blink of an eye off she goes….

portrait of a boy hertfordshire photographer

portrait of a boy hertfordshire photographer

this is a little self indulgent, but i was looking through last year’s holiday photos and it struck me just how much my 2nd child, my eldest boy had changed over the year. i guess that happens as they hit the teenage years, but still i was shocked to see just how much. so, another reminder for me to get him in front of the camera, a little more often than he wants to be. (actually, he doesn’t want to be at all…) i feel the need to document, even a little, this stage in his life before he’s a man…a proper man! does anyone else get that?

time to be cunning me thinks, this boy knows all my tricks to get him in front of the camera and the bribes are getting far too expensive! how did i do it? he needed a “mug shot” for a football identity card so i took full advantage! in all honesty this shoot was a mini shoot…a very mini shoot, about 6 minutes at the most but i think i captured him and the boy that he still is. sweet, caring, shy in front of the camera, my little man whom I’m very proud of!!!

should anyone be interested in a teenage photo shoot, or any photo shoot for that matter, give me a call or contact me via the website. i would love to hear from you x

that golden hour glow welwyn garden city photographer

that golden hour glow welwyn garden city photographer

it is definitely the season for “golden hour”. we all love it, that special time just as the sun rises, or in this case, goes down. the season is short for us english, so we catch it when we can! i was so chuffed to take these three, and their dad, to a location perfect for a summer evening photo shoot. i would recommend this time to everyone if i could, but i guess it’s not always the best time for very little ones and not always convenient for others. this family were game though, and as luck would have it the sun came out for us as we strolled through the grasses. dad said he favoured black and white images, so there were plenty of those in the gallery, but you can’t beat the colours in a golden hour photo shoot too. here’s a selection of my favourites…

the most beautiful wedding welwyn garden city photographer

the most beautiful wedding welwyn garden city photographer

about a year ago a bride- to- be called me asking if i would photograph her wedding. i don’t normally do weddings but we seemed to be on the same song sheet in terms of what her and husband- to -be wanted and what i did, so i agreed! they wanted a fly on the wall, reportage style for their day, no formal photographs, which is right up my street. initially we talked about only having the day shot in black and white, but as she decided on the days style and colours it became clear that i would just have to capture the colours too, they were so delicate and beautiful. in the end i gave them a set of images in colour and a similar set in black and white as well.

so, a couple of weeks ago i shot my first wedding, (just a little scary!) it wasn’t just any wedding though, it was THE most beautiful wedding ever. not just because it looked so pretty, although it did, but because of the people and the love. these two have known each other since they were kids and their parents were friends before that…it’s such a romantic story and i love it! the warmth from their friends and family filled the venue and made the atmosphere so perfect. little girls ran around, dresses billowing in the breeze and the little boys threw pine cones into the lake. (some of the “big boys” did that too, although i’m not sure they were supposed to!!!) i feel completely honoured to have been part of their day, a day which will always warm my heart and make me happy.

there was laughter, there were tears, but above all …LOVE. here are just a few of their amazing day x

family photo shoot welwyn garden city photographer

family photo shoot welwyn garden city photographer

well, the saying goes “never work with children or animals” but if it was always as fun as this session was i would do it all day long!!! this was the first time i have had a pet dog involved in a photo shoot…it was great. these three got out of the car and bounded off in to the woods with so much energy, i knew immediately that this shoot was going to be great fun. mum wanted the pictures as a 40th birthday present for her husband and i was pleased to hear that he was over the moon with them.
